Freemans Bay is three suburbs wearing one name. There are the restored workers' cottages up around Napier and Hepburn Streets, the 1970s and 80s townhouse blocks in the middle, and the newer apartments running down toward Victoria Park and the Westhaven waterfront. Each is a different job.
The cottages are small, vertical and full of detail. Two or three levels on a tight footprint means a lot of stairs and very little room to work around furniture; original timber floors, narrow skirtings and sash windows mean time goes into detail rather than floor area. They are deceptively slow properties to clean properly, and anyone quoting them purely on bedroom count is guessing.
Parking is the other Freemans Bay fact of life. The streets are narrow, largely residents-only, and often one-way with no space outside the house at nine in the morning.
